FD 500,
501, 502, 503, 504, 507 IRS Master File SSN/Name Control
Mismatch Errors - Upon receiving an electronically transmitted tax return, the
IRS computers compare the taxpayer's, spouse's, and dependents' names against a list of
all known Social Security Numbers to validate the tax return. If a match cannot be found
between the last name on the tax return and a Social Security Number from the
IRS Master
File, the tax return will be rejected. In most cases, you need to verify the Social Security
Number with a Social Security ID card. It is possible that the tax return was transmitted to
the IRS with an incorrect SSN. After correcting the tax return, it can be
transmitted to the IRS again. SSN Mismatch errors are common in situations where a last name has
recently changed, possibly due to marriage or divorce. You must contact the Social
Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 to update your name, or else you can use the
name as it appears on the mailing label of the tax return. This may take awhile, so it is
suggested that you file your tax return on paper.
